I'm thinking about course revisions for 4823. I may not be teaching it in the future, but I might, and since some of our faculty have changed over the last year or two I think it might be best to realign the course a little bit. If you're interested in providing some feedback, I'd love to hear about it. Here are some ideas I have been thinking about recently:
- Developing a professional portfolio (like an advanced CV, with actual products included)
- Finding ways to allow students to do their practicum in their own institutions (tricky, but possibly much easier on students in some ways, and perhaps helpful in their own workload reviews).
- Include in practicum hours a requirement to attend a professional conference or meeting of some sort.
- As part of practicum project, require submission of final document to a professional conference or meeting of some sort.
I think the ideas you have come up with are great. The problem with the nurse actually doing clinicals at their place of employment is that directors and administration may not want that nurse to attend certain meetings and the manager that they're following may be reluctant to disclose certain information which can hinder the true learning experience. The most difficulty aspect of this course hass been the time to actually do the clinicals. However, I have managed to break up my clinical hours 4 to 5 hours/day. Jennifer and Linda have been great in sharing their practice and experience with us. I have personally enjoyed reading their blogs and discussions.
ReplyDeleteI believe the idea of developing a professional portfolio, is one that would be very useful to help RN's prepare as they transit into more leadership and management roles. An advanced professional portfolio would reflect the nurse's professional goal, competencies, career advancement and continuing professional development activities and experiences. It's effective use would promote professionalism in nursing practice.
ReplyDelete@Angela: I completely agree, but am just not sure how to work around this requirement. Some students have bosses that are very unconcerned about their nurses' furthering their education. I need to keep thinking about this one. Thanks for the feedback.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment Abby. That is exactly what I hope the portfolio to do.
